Students apply to UMC as a freshman if they have earned or attempted fewer than 24 semester or 36 quarter college credits after high school graduation. Students with only college credits earned as PSEO, CIHS, or AP courses are considered freshman. All prospective students are encouraged to apply for admission.

Freshman Review Factors

UMC does not hold a minimum score requirement for the ACT/SAT or for high school GPA. Admission decisions are based on an assessment of indicators for success at UMC.

• Grade Point Average (minimum 2.0 or above preferred)
• ACT/SAT test scores (minimum 21 ACT or SAT equivalent)
• Other indicators of academic potential

Students who do not meet the minimum preferred requirements will be referred to the Admissions Committee for an admission decision.

Conditional Admissions*

Students who do not meet the preferred admissions requirements may be admitted on 'Conditional Admit' status. In order to assure academic success, these students will be required to complete additional steps during their first semester, such as:

• Meet with their academic advisor and complete an Academic Plan (AAP).
• Meet with staff of the Academic Assistance Center (AAC) for additional guidance and preparation.
• Sign up for a tutor in at least one class.
• Enroll in General Education 1000-Seminar for New Students*

Online Learning

UMC currently offers online degree programs in Applied Health, Business Management, and Bachelor of Manufacturing Management. Students wishing to pursue an online degree should apply following general freshman or transfer application instructions.

Persons may take online courses not in pursuit of a degree. Non-degree seeking students should complete the Application for Non-Degree Students . Please contact the Center for Adult Learning or via phone at 1-800-862-6466 ext. 8681 for more information on distant learning options.

English as a Second Language Program

The ESL program at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) is a pre-collegiate English program providing English language instruction and related support services to foreign students who are both qualified for and have a desire to study undergraduate classes at UMC.

The ESL program is designed for highly motivated students who wish to read, speak, hear, and write English for professional, personal, or academic purposes. The ESL program:

• Is a non-credit program in English as a Second Language.
• Has three levels of instruction (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) with each level typically taking one semester (16 weeks).
• Prepares students to apply for degree-seeking status after completing the advanced level of instruction.

Recommended Timeline

September – February 1

Apply for admission. Merit scholarship funding is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis determined by the Application for Admission. Students may apply after February 1, however scholarship availability will depend on funds available for students who apply for admission after February 1

January - March
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). While the federal government does not announce an official deadline, some federal financial aid programs, including grants, have limited funding and are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Also, completing the FAFSA early will assure students receive a financial aid award packet estimate prior to May 1.

February 15

Apply for Specialty Scholarships before February 15. Students must be admitted before they are eligible to apply.

February - July

Financial aid award packets are sent to students. Students must approve award packages; instructions will be included with award packets.

March - July

Apply for Housing. Admitted students will be mailed housing contracts in late March. Students are encouraged to complete housing contracts as soon as possible to assure space is available.

March - August

A registration packet will be sent to admitted students beginning in March. At that time, students will choose a registration date and be guided through the process to register for fall classes.

August

Attend orientation and move into the residence halls!

Housing & Residential Life

Two residence halls and two apartment complexes provide coeducational on-campus housing for nearly 500 students. Several Resident Advisors (RA) in each of our residence halls help to guide our students through their first year on campus with safety tips, study advice, and encouraging them to get involved in on-campus activities.

All rooms on campus are furnished with extra-long twin beds, wardrobe and drawer space, desk, and chair for each student as well as phone service and computer access. Laundry facilities are also within each residence hall. Residential Life

Academic Assistance Center(AAC)

The Academic Assistance Center (AAC) is an excellent resource available for students to assist them in achieving their academic goals. The staff and center provide a variety of resources including free peer tutoring, free professional tutoring in five subjects, computer technology assistance, and computerized tutorials.  The AAC is also home to the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and Student Support Services (SSS).  SSS is a federally funded program and students enrolled in the program can benefit from additional assistance in completing financial aid forms as well as having free access to a number of social and cultural events facilitated through SSS throughout the year.  http://www.umcrookston.edu/Services/academicassist/index.htm.
