The UMC Advantage

Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences and have many horticultural career options. Your classmates are a mix of traditional college students and returning students who may be preparing for a career change or want to further develop their horticultural interest. You will develop technical, scientific, educational, management, research, leadership, and interpersonal skills to succeed in your chosen fields.

The polytechnic approach provides you with a thorough hands-on program to turn your interest in plants into successful careers. Class labs are actual growing enterprises and the UMC campus provides excellent opportunities to hone your landscaping and designing skills. Complementary liberal arts and business management courses prepare you for a satisfying and life-long career as a horticulture professional.

UMC combines a solid foundation of applied science courses with practical mechanical and technical expertise. We blend in a strong business operations and management background and interpersonal communication skills for a well-balanced horticultural science program. As a result, UMC graduates will have the experience and versatility to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the horticulture industry.

Facilities

The excellent facilities UMC provides for the Horticulture program lend strength to students' experiences.

  • Production Horticulture Building
This facility is used as a production horticulture lab modeled directly after those within the horticulture industry. UMC horticulture students gain direct experience with the culture, care, and growth of commercial horticulture crops here.
  • Bergland Laboratory
The building serves as a center for teaching, for applied student lab experiences, and for research in the botanical and horticultural sciences.
