The Hotel,
Restaurant, and Institutional Management (HRI) degree at UMC prepares
you for managerial positions in the rapidly growing hospitality industry.
You can specialize in working with food, lodging, travel, tourism,
and entertainment.
UMC's
program offers three distinct areas of emphasis allowing students
the flexibility to pursue their individual interests:
Hotel & Restaurant Management, Resort & Spa Management,
and Food Service Administration. Students graduating with this
degree will
possess the technical and intellectual skills required of the twenty-first
century hospitality professional.
According to the National Restaurant Association, in 2007 there were over 935,000 restaurants in the US employing 12.8 million people, making food service the largest private sector employer in the nation. Over the last six years UMC Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management graduates have an industry placement rate of 98%.
The second largest growth percentage within the state of Minnesota for managerial and administrative occupations is expected to be the food service and lodging managers, with an increase of thirteen percent.
There are over 48,000 hotels and resorts in the United States. That comes to about 4,500,000 guest rooms that can be sold on a given night.
In the U.S., tourism is the third largest retail employer (behind automotive and food stores). Tourism is the first, second, or third largest employer in 30 of the 50 states.
The hotel and restaurant industry will add over 2 million new jobs by the year 2016. This simply means continued growth and a high demand for quality managers!
