Direct, Applied Experience Working with Animals
UMC students gain direct experience working with University-owned and local herds of dairy and beef cattle, swine, and sheep and have many opportunities to apply the theory and skills they are learning in the classroom. In addition, class field trips include visits to approximately 30 farms.
UMC students also have access to the 100-head Northwest Research and Outreach Center Dairy Facility and Beef Feedlot Facilities.
Clubs and Professional Organizations
The UMC Dairy Club participates in numerous events including the Collegiate American Dairy Science Knowledge Bowl and The World Dairy Exposition.
The UMC Animal Science Association participates in numerous events including a major livestock show (Denver, Houston, etc.)
UMC is also active within other ogranizations that offer many opportunities for students who enjoy animal judging. They include:
UMC also sponsors its own judging contests on campus as part of its annual Ag-Arama event.
Industry Involvement
UMC's Strategic plan includes the implimentation of Program Improvement Audit Committees (PIAC) to aid in the implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of each program.
The membership of the Animal Industries PIAC is comprised of people with diverse backgrounds and interests, including representatives from business, industrial, educational, and health organizations, as well as from the University faculty and students.

Internship Component
Internships are supervised on-the-job training experiences. These experiences give the students the exposure to the relevant competencies necessary in order to progress into top management positions. Student gain valuable applied experience and have opportunities to make valuable career contacts. It's not uncommon for internships to develop into longer-term eployment after graduation.
A Campus-Wide Focus on Technology
The distinctive electronic learning environment at UMC complements the eqine industries management curriculum. All students are issued laptop computers and use them and related software on a daily basis. The resulting technological skill--or techno-savvy--combined with the degree program's career preparation makes UMC's graduates highly marketable and sought-after by employers.
