Scientific advances are changing the way America—and the rest of the world—raises and markets field crops. Agronomy deals with the science of producing these crops and managing soils as well as with the trading and marketing of these commodities. Today’s agronomists need specialized training in advanced agricultural technologies as well as expertise in processes related to chemical application, seed conditioning, production, quality, and value-added processing. Business and economics skills are also vital.
Industry demand for agronomists is much greater than the supply, and a degree from UMC carries a strong, positive reputation among potential employers in agronomy.
The B.S. in Agronomy is a career-oriented program that combines science-based agricultural training and education with a strong liberal arts background to produce graduates skilled in the highly techinical fields of agronomic science and crop production.
The flexibility of the Agronomy program allows students the ability to follow one of two emphasis:
- Agronomic science or industry which allows students to build a thorough understanding of crop science with a concentration in areas such as agricultural chemicals, fertilizers, integrated pest management and seed conditioning and technology.
- Crop production which, along with building strong agronomic skills, has an agricultural business component that allows students to develop their marketing and farm business management skills.
