Job Title:

Summer Intern

Summarize Your
Experience:

I enjoyed my time at the WCROC and learned a lot about how research projects are conducted at the research centers.  I got the chance to help out on a research project and then at the end of the summer I had to give a presentation on the materials, methods, results, etc. from the project.

Job Responsibilities:

My objective for the research project I worked on this past summer was to determine why Illinois Bundleflower persisted well the seeding year but not the following year.  To accomplish this I took plant counts and soil samples.  While not busy with the research project I helped the forage crew manage three different plots and did a variety of other odd jobs throughout the summer.

Challenges on the job:

The research project I was originally hired to help out with dealt with grazing young dairy steers on Illinois Bundleflower.  However, the forage (Illinois Bundleflower) did not grow as well as had been expect and the pasture was not able to be grazed this last summer.  So one of the greatest challenges I faced at work this summer was not being able to do the original project and having to coming up with a different one.

What I liked most about
the job:

Even though I was not able to work on the project I was originally hired for, I feel that my boss and the station head were very helpful in still providing me with an adequate internship experience and finding me a new research project that I could still benefit from greatly.  Everyone at WCROC was also great to work with, very friendly and helpful.
