Job Title:

Turf Manager-Oak Lake Golf Course

Job Responsibilities:

Oversee day to day operation of the golf course grounds; supervise grounds crew, fertilizer and chemical application, greens maintenance, mowing schedules and cup placement, equipment and irrigation maintenance, mowing and other jobs as needed.

Summarize Your
Experience:

I supervised the reconstruction of a fairway, and obtained first hand experience with seeding and care of new turf.  I worked with and maintained a computerized irrigation system.  I worked first hand with care and maintenance of reel mowers for use on greens, tees and fairways.  I worked with aerification and topdressing equipment.

What I liked most about
the job:

Being turf manager gave me freedom to apply the knowledge form the course work at UMC.  The reconstruction of the fairway created an opportunity to learn first hand about newly seeded turf and its care.  Supervising two experienced employees provided an opportunity to set some new direction for the course while holding on to some time tested strategies that work well.  Working with a good staff was very educational and the exposure to working with the public was helpful.  It was a pleasure to work under a supportive administrator and board.

Challenges on the job:

I found it challenging to keep everything prioritized appropriately.  Many days were planned a certain way only to go another way quickly.  Supervising employees was sometimes challenging.  Working with a downturn in the economy was probably the biggest challenge of the summer.  We found ourselves with fewer hours to work with and prioritizing the needs of the course was a daily challenge.
