Program Options - E-Learning Emphasis
The E-Learning Revolution
E-learning technologies allow information to be presented in a more accessible, customized, learner-centered manner. Combining text, theory, and application with computer software, simulations, audio, video, and real-time discussion-all offered over the Internet-has made education more accessible than ever before. Students control the times and the pace of learning and determine the best method suited to their learning style. Teachers present the information, provide feedback, and serve in an advisory manner. The e-learning professional works with both groups, drawing on technology skills to help students use technology more effectively when learning and to help teachers use technology more effectively when teaching.
UMC's e-learning emphasis prepares students to use industry-standard interactive computer and Web technologies to design, develop, manage, and maintain e-learning and e-training systems. Students are also trained to use state-of-the-art instructional design models.
High Demand for E-Learning Professionals
There has been an explosion in the demand for e-learning professionals since September 11, 2001. Many corporations, agencies, and institutions throughout the country have curtailed employee travels, turning to alternative modes of meetings, conferencing, training, education, and interaction. The recent economic downturn has added to this demand because more people are returning to school or are being retrained through alternative learning delivery modes.
The full embrace of course management systems, such as WebCT™ and Blackboard™, by the training industry, higher education, and some K-12 school districts has created a great need for skills in the management and development of this new electronic learning environment. UMC has developed the emphasis in e-learning technology to meet the great demand for e-learning designers, developers, and administrators. It is distinctive because of its balance of theory and hands-on application.
