Advantages and Features

  • UMC's Dietetics Club offers a chance for professional development and networking with professionals already working in the field of nutrition and dietetics.
  • Demand for dietetic technicians is very high--UMC grads often have many job options and offers to choose from.
  • UMC students are issued their own notebook computer and utilize a wide variety of interactive multimedia--including web-based,  interactive computer simulations, CD-ROMs, and DVDs and videotapes for one-on-one practice in diet counseling and diet histories.  Students also use Nutritionist V, a computer program for nutritional analysis.
  • Special equipment used by students includes the biomedical imedance machine and  the skin fold caliper used to analyze and determine body composition.
  • UMC's program emphasizes applied or "hands-on" learning in laboratories and through field experience in practicum and internship.
  • Since 1994 100% of UMC's dietetic technician grads have passed the DTR examination in order to become registered dietetic technicians. 
  • Each year UMC hosts its annual Dietetics Symposium, where current students, alumni, and industry professionals present and discuss current topics, share personal experiences, and network on a professional basis



American Dietetic Association

UMC's Dietetic Technician program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The CADE address is:

Graduates are eligible to become registered as dietetic technicians. This involves passing a national written exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (DTR).  For more information about the exam, refer to CDR's website:  http://www.cdrnet.org.  

Technicians who successfully write the exam are entitled to use the initials "DTR" to signify professional competence.  Since 1994 100% of UMC's dietetic technician grads have passed the DTR examination and are registered dietetic technicians.
