Initiated by the Clinton administration, the America Reads Challenge enabled parents and educators to complement and expand existing successful literacy efforts and to help children read well independently by the end of the third grade. UMC continues to allocate Federal Work Study funds for an America Reads program. Ten America Reads tutors are placed in local elementary classrooms to assist with reading.
