ABOUT TXT-U
How do I register up for TXT-U?
To register for TXT-U, click on the TXT-U icon. You will be taken to a page for X.500 validation (required) and to complete the registration process. Your registration information is private and will not be shared.
I don't want to get unnecessary text messages. Will TXT-U be used to send other kinds of information?
No. TXT-U will only be used to notify you about real emergency situations and campus closings. Your registration information is private and will not be shared. You may unsubscribe at any time.
Will TXT-U be available on all University campuses?
TXT-U is being phased in across campuses. The Crookston and Twin Cities campus components are live. The Morris, and Rochester campuses will be added in the near future. The Duluth campus has its own system. See link on the right for Duluth registration.
When should I register for TXT-U?
Register now! TXT-U is available on the Crookston and Twin Cities campuses. If you are a member of the Morris or Rochester campus communities and register now, you will be notified as soon as TXT-U is live on your campus.
Can I register my parents or other family members for TXT-U?
Only University faculty, staff and students can sign up for TXT-U. However, you can include parents and others on your account. If you register others for TXT-U, you are responsible for notifying them about the service.
Does TXT-U cost anything to use?
There is no charge to receive TXT-U. However, your cell phone carrier might charge you to receive text messages, so please check your plan. If you have a plan for unlimited text messages, you will not be charged.
Will all cell phone carriers deliver TXT-U messages?
Yes, the University is using a service provider that works with all major cell phone providers. Text messages will be sent to your carrier for delivery to your phone. While it is extremely unlikely that you would not receive a TXT-U message, signal strength and other issues with your carrier could impact delivery to your phone.
I don't use text messages. Is TXT-U the only way the University will deliver emergency messages?
No. TXT-U is one of many ways the University provides notifications about emergencies, including tone alert radios (coming soon), on-the-ground public safety personnel, e-mail and the UMC Today page (www.UMCrookston.edu/umcnews). The goal is to communicate emergency information in many different ways to ensure that the most people receive notification as quickly as is possible.
What do I do when I receive a TXT-U emergency notification message?
TXT-U messages will give you instructions about what you should do. If you are in class, tell the instructor about the message to announce it to others.
What if my instructor does not allow cell phones in the classroom?
Follow your instructor's rules regarding classroom cell phone use. TXT-U is just one of several means by which the University will communicate in times of crisis.
