$$$STAND Leader Positions Open$$$ - Are you active in community service projects? Did you know you could earn education awards for your service? Well you can. Students Together for Networking and Development (STAND) is a part-time AmeriCorps position where you can earn an education award worth $1,181.25 to apply to current tuition, future tuition, or loans for undergraduate or graduate school. You would work closely with UMC’s Service Learning Center in coordinating service projects for UMC students along with other volunteer service-related activities. If you are interested please stop by Bede 122 and talk to Nikki or grab an application from the door file.

CONFERENCE – "Turning the Tides: Environmental Action for Cancer Prevention" is a conference designed to educate us about the environmental links to cancer and also teach us how we can take steps to prevent it. The conference is on Friday, October 15 and Saturday, October 16th in St. Paul, MN The Women’s Cancer Resource is sponsoring the conference and will try to provide financial assistance to those who find the registration fee of $50.00, and hotel cost a financial hardship. Transportation will also be provided. This is open to every one. Please contact Stacey, 8512, for more information.

TRIVIA—WE HAVE A WINNER!!! Ryan Dickelman’s name was drawn from the correct entries to this week’s trivia question and he has won a free pass to the Grand Theater. He can stop by and pick up his movie pass from Pam in Bede 120 or Meloni in Bede 106. The answer to: At what temperature do Fahrenheit and Celsius read the same degrees? –40 degrees. And now you know that too. This week’s trivia question is: What is the strongest muscle in the body? I know there is a lot of you out there who know the answer to this one. Why not take a chance on winning a movie pass? Write your answer on a slip of paper along with your name and e-mail address and drop it off in the box located at the Bede Information Desk by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. We will draw a winner from the correct answers. The winner’s name will appear in next week’s Regal’s Report.

THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE COMPANY 1999-2000 TOUR – will be rolling into our city to tell "Tremendously Tall Tales" by Capt. Eddie B. Brown’s Traveling All-Star Yokels and starring Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, Mike Fink and John Henry. A Children’s Theatre Master Class will be held October 13, 7:00 p.m., in Kiehle Auditorium

JOKE OF THE WEEK – When the three –year-old opened the birthday gift from his grandmother, he discovered a water pistol. He squealed with delight and headed for the nearest sink. The Mother was not so pleased. She turned to Grandmom and said, "I’m surprised at you. Don’t you remember how we used to drive you crazy with water guns?" Grandmom smiled and then replied "I remember".

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY – The Senate is providing college and university students internship opportunities with individual Senators and staff. Those form all fields of study are encouraged to apply. These internships expose one to the legislative process as well as to the internal workings of a specific Senator’s office. Because there are limited numbers of internships available, applications need to be returned as soon as possible, preferably no later than Friday, November 12, 1999. "HANDS-ON TRAINING IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS – Practical Knowledge You Can Use Today" is a seminar series to be broadcast over the North Dakota Interactive Video Network to Grand Forks. The five (5) seminars will air October 13th and 20th, November 10th and December 8th. All seminars are scheduled form 1:00 – 4:00 PM Central Time. WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO BRING IN THE MILLENIUM? – How about this? The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is currently seeking volunteers to help participate with the Mississippi Mile-ennium event. Volunteers are needed for assistance with several outdoor and indoor events. Some of the events will be snowshoe, cross-country skiing, and kids art activities. Between 10,000 and 20,000 people are expected to attend the two-day event. They are looking for volunteers for: December 31, 1999 and January 1, 2000. The event will be held at the Nicollet Island Pavilion. If you want more information about being a volunteer contact Abby Bennett-Schrader at (612) 661-4882.

 

"VOICES FOR THE LAND" Seeks Essay Entrants – Essays are being sought through a statewide essay contest called "Voices For The Land." The contest is open to everyone to write up to 400 word essays about places in Minnesota that are special to them. The deadline for submissions is November 15, 1999. Winning essays will be published by national literary nonprofit press, Milkweed Editions, in a special edition chapbook. Winners will be invited to appear at community readings around the state and selected essays will be published by the Star Tribune and newspapers statewide. Students an access the information by "clicking on" View Your Student Account under the section titled "UMC Student Account Information On-line" at the following URL: http://www.umcrookston.edu/people/finaid/indes.htm. Students are encouraged to review their account balance and all charges for accuracy. Questions regarding your account should be directed to the UMC Business Office, 121 Selvig Hall (218) 281-8331. E-mail can be directed to Bmurphy@mail.crk.umn.edu. To use the web to access your student records you must do the following (gold colored handouts describing this in detail titles "Using the Web to Access Your Student Records" are available form the Office of the Registrar and at many other locations across campus): 1. Know your Internet ID and password. (Your ID is the same as your e-mail user name.) Whenever you access your Student Records, you will be asked to login. If you run into difficulties call the Help Desk at 281-8000. 2. When the login screen appears enter your Internet ID and password. A screen will appear telling you that you have successfully logged on. Do not close this screen! It must remain active while you access your records, so click Continue or minimize it. 3. When you are finished reviewing your records, and if you do not need to access other links, LOGOUT.
