HALLOWEEN HAUNTED HOUSE--Prepare to be scared!! Thursday, October 29, from 4:00 - 5:30 (younger set) and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. (older) and Saturday, October 31, from 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 - 11:00 p.m.. $2.00 admission. All proceeds to be shared with Violence Intervention Project and Habitat for Humanity. 3rd Floor Bede Hall.

'CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL' BOOKS--If you've read, love or just heard of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books, then here's something right up your alley. Stories are being gathered for "Chicken Soup for the Soul." The stories themselves can be up to 1,200 words and must be uplifting and/or inspiring. Submission can be original or a previously printed item (please provide the original source if possible)! Deadline: November 1, 1998. APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE--Dining Services is implementing a student employee of the month award. All Dining Service employees work hard to service our campus. Please give each one a pat on the shoulder, thank you or even just a smile. The recipient for September is Wendy Messenbrink. Wendy willingly worked extra shifts and weekends when Dining Services were in dire need of workers. She always has a pleasant attitude no matter what work was required. In appreciation of her dedication she will receive $25.00 in RMA bucks. Congratulations Wendy.

LEADERSHIP LEARNING OPPORTUNITY--Are you a leader? The Coro Fellows Program seeks individuals with demonstrated leadership potential and a genuine commitment to public service. The program is a nine-month, graduate level, full-time, experience-based, leadership training program in public affairs. Participation requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. FLU SHOTS--It's that time of year again…cold and flu season. Two Flu Shot Clinics will be offered again this year. In order to provide better service, two nurses from Polk County Nursing Service will be on campus both days providing flu shots. STUDENTS ONLY: Tuesday, November 3 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., SCC 131, cost: free and ALL OTHERS: Monday, November 9 from 11:00 - 1:00 p.m., SCC 131 and the cost is $8.00. ANNUAL STUDENT TRAVEL WRITING CONTEST--Twenty-one years ago, Clay Hubbs, an English professor and international studies adviser at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, began publishing a magazine on overseas educational travel called Transitions Abroad. To gather material for the first issues, he announced a national student writing contest. To celebrate the magazine's 22nd year of publication, the 1977 contest is being repeated. The winning submission will be published in the March 1999 issue and the writer will receive a cash prize of $250.00. The postmarked deadline for entries--which must be submitted on a diskette or sent by email and be no longer than 2,000 words--is December 1, 1998. FOUR $5,000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE GIVEN AWAY TO UMC STUDENTS--Michael A. Choudry, founder of Atlas Air Inc., which provides cargo services to major airlines all over the world, and a 1978 UMC graduate in Agricultural Aviation, has donated funds to award four $5,000.00 scholarships annually to aspiring UMC student entrepreneurs. One scholarship will be available to a new freshman student, and one each to a returning sophomore, junior, and senior student. STUDENT PAYROLL CHECKS--In order to ensure that students receive payroll checks on a timely basis, we need students and supervisors to assist in turning in time cards according to the biweekly payroll schedule. (Supervisors should have this schedule). Time cards need to be signed by the student and the supervisor and should be turned in immediately after the pay period ends in order to avoid delays. Paydays are every other Wednesday with checks available for pick up at the Business Office.
BEDE SUGGESTION BOX--Thanks to Sue Jacobson for donating a small ironing board for use. Free to use from the Bede Info Desk. Suggestion: "As long as you made a unisex bathroom, how about a baby changing station in it?" Great idea!! We will be ordering and installing it as soon as it arrives. Keep those suggestions coming. WANT TO BE A SCHOOL MASCOT??--Are you interested in promoting school spirit by cheering on our athletic teams as well as attending athletic events? We are looking for a spirited person who would like to be Regal the Eagle at sporting events. MAKE A DIFFERENCE…BE A RESIDENT ADVISOR--Applications are now being taken for the position of Resident Advisor. This position will be for the Winter and Spring quarters. Applications will be taken through 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30. Applications can be picked up at the Office of Residential Life in McCall Hall or at the Skyberg Desk. The Resident Advisor position offers several opportunities for obtaining and improving life skills that will help you be successful in the future. The R.A. position offers room, 80 meals and $132.00 in Morsel money and a $200.00 stipend per quarter. UMC’S E-MAIL POLICY—E-mail addresses and passwords are assigned to individuals and are not to be shared. Students are encouraged to select an obscure password and change it frequently. Access to, and use of, e-mail is a privilege and should be treated as such by all users. Computing services, including e-mail, may not be used for illegal or unauthorized purposes including: harassment, destruction of, or damage to, equipment, software, or data belonging to others; or the disruption or unauthorized monitoring of electronic communications. Using e-mail to participate in illegal acts is itself illegal and may be subject to prosecution by state and federal authorities. Use of e-mail for private business purposes unrelated to the University is not allowed. Students are responsible for using system resources wisely. Students who use the system in ways that are judged excessive or wasteful, may have their access taken away and may be subject to University disciplinary procedures.

WEB EMPLOYER—Web Employer is a component that empowers employers we work with to post positions and search for candidate resumes over the web. This means less data entry for our office and staff and fewer hassles with faxing candidate resumes. Web Employer gives 1stPlace! up-to-date information on all employer activity by creating referral records so that we know which employers are contacting which applicants. Employers can only view active applicant resumes and are restricted from viewing any additional applicant information. Web components allow us to track and administer every interaction students and employers have with the system from the 1stPlace! database within our office. CAMPUS AA GROUP—Students interested in starting a campus AA group may leave their names with Laurie Wilson in Bede Hall room 119. If there are enough interested students, we will identify space on campus for a regular meeting.
PARKING PERMITS—A reminder that all vehicles on campus must have a valid parking permit. Permits can be purchased from the Business Office in Selvig Hall. Vehicles without permits and/or parking in a No Parking Area will ticketed and/or towed. Thank you for your continued cooperation!
