FLU SHOTS--It's that time of year again…cold and flu season. Two Flu Shot Clinics will be offered again this year. In order to provide better service, two nurses from Polk County Nursing Service will be on campus both days providing flu shots. (Regal pick of the week is: Manda Schmeling). STUDENTS ONLY: Tuesday, November 3 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., SCC 131, cost: free and ALL OTHERS: Monday, November 9 from 11:00 - 1:00 p.m., SCC 131 and the cost is $8.00. IHSA WESTERN TEAM--On October 3rd and 4th the IHSA Western team traveled to Brookings, SD to compete in a show against SDSU, SCSU, ISU, UNL and UWRF. The team had a great show and had a lot of enthusiasm and teamwork. UMC was well represented and is a very well rounded team. Individual results are as follows: Addam Albright, 5th, 2nd; Melissa Andrist 3rd, 4th; Jennifer Bangsund 2nd, 3rd; Mike Davis 2nd, 1st; Mark Deshler 6th, 1st; Kelly Fulton 1st, 3rd; Rowdi Hildebrand 2nd, 5th; Tara Kude 5th, 1st; Corri Lavergne 2nd, 4th, Luke McCapes 1st, 2nd; Melissa McCormack 3rd, 1st; Tyler Olson 2nd, 1st; Sharon Remer 2nd, 3rd; Beth Roeschlein 1st, 2nd and Emily Wetmore 1st, 1st. On October 10 the IHSA Western Team traveled to Ames, Iowa to Iowa State University. There they competed against UNL, SDSU, ISU, UWRF and UWM. UMC was Reserve High Point Team in the first show and then was the High Point Team for the second show. We were consistently in the top of our classes and again worked well as a team. THE HORSEMAN'S ASSOCIATION is also raffling an Appaloosa Colt to raise money for the IHSA travel. We will begin selling on campus in two weeks. However we are starting to sell the tickets on Friday, October 16. Tickets are $1.00. If you are interested in buying a ticket or two, contact a club member.
FOUR $5,000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE GIVEN AWAY TO UMC STUDENTS--Michael A. Choudry, founder of Atlas Air Inc., which provides cargo services to major airlines all over the world, and a 1978 UMC graduate in Agricultural Aviation, has donated funds to award four $5,000.00 scholarships annually to aspiring UMC student entrepreneurs. One scholarship will be available to a new freshman student, and one each to a returning sophomore, junior, and senior student. From 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, afternoon classes will be cancelled for a special half-day to be devoted to semester conversion advising for students. Information and advising sessions have been scheduled concerning UMC's change from a quarter-based academic year to a semester-based year beginning fall 1999. An all-campus session for students, faculty, and interested staff is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. in Kiehle auditorium, followed at 1:30 by group sessions for each program major, with individual advising sessions between advisers and advisees scheduled to begin at 2:30. Special prizes will be given to the first 200 students at the opening session and coupons that can be redeemed for an ice-cream treat will be provided to all students attending the program sessions. An information table will be staffed in the Sahlstrom Conference Center foyer to provide information and answer questions.STUDENT AMBASSADORS--Student Ambassadors for the 1998-1999 school year are: Kerstin Trimble, Luis Delgado, Kathy Bade, Petronella Chilala, Martin Hochhalter, Melissa McCormack, Eric Perkins, Tracy Chen, Tashma Teepell, Jody Lundbohm, Josh Wilcoxen and Sarah Williamson. UMC Student Ambassadors assist with a wide range of campus service projects and educational activities to enhance the campus climate for all members. Advisors for the group this year are Stacey Grunewald and Laurie Wilson.

1998 HIKE FOR HABITAT--What is it? A five kilometer (3.1 miles) hike to raise funds for the Crookston Area Habitat for Humanity. When is it? Saturday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m.. Why Should I hike? To raise money for the Habitat houses in the Crookston area. Prizes will be awarded to the top two pledge collectors. Questions? STUDENT PAYROLL CHECKS--In order to ensure that students receive payroll checks on a timely basis, we need students and supervisors to assist in turning in time cards according to the biweekly payroll schedule. (Supervisors should have this schedule). Time cards need to be signed by the student and the supervisor and should be turned in immediately after the pay period ends in order to avoid delays. Paydays are every other Wednesday with checks available for pick up at the Business Office.
WIN A $50.00 GIFT CERTIFICATE--New freshmen students have been sent an e-mail message requesting that they complete a short "New Student Survey" via the web. Two names will be drawn at random from those completing the survey and each will receive a $50.00 gift certificate from the UMC Bookstore. If you received the e-mail message about the survey please complete it and enter your name in the drawing. The winning names will be listed in the Regal's Report.
BEDE SUGGESTION BOX--"Could you please acquire an ironing board, and possibly an iron-and add it to the rental list". In checking with Residence Life they have several portable ironing boards and irons that can be checked out for free at the Skyberg Desk. I think this should help you out. RESIDENT ADVISOR APPLICATIONS NOW BEING TAKEN--Applications are now being taken for the position of Resident Advisor. This position will be for the Winter and Spring quarters. Applications will be taken through 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30. Applications can be picked up at the Office of Residential Life in McCall Hall or at the Skyberg Desk. The Resident Advisor position offers several opportunities for obtaining and improving life skills that will help you be successful in the future. The R.A. position offers room, 80 meals and $132.00 in Morsel money and a $200.00 stipend per quarter. UMC’S E-MAIL POLICY—E-mail addresses and passwords are assigned to individuals and are not to be shared. Students are encouraged to select an obscure password and change it frequently. Access to, and use of, e-mail is a privilege and should be treated as such by all users. Computing services, including e-mail, may not be used for illegal or unauthorized purposes including: harassment, destruction of, or damage to, equipment, software, or data belonging to others; or the disruption or unauthorized monitoring of electronic communications. Using e-mail to participate in illegal acts is itself illegal and may be subject to prosecution by state and federal authorities. Use of e-mail for private business purposes unrelated to the University is not allowed. Students are responsible for using system resources wisely. Students who use the system in ways that are judged excessive or wasteful, may have their access taken away and may be subject to University disciplinary procedures.
REAUTHORIZATION OF THE HIGHER EDUCATION ACT--One of the bonuses of the Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, which has been passed by the House and Senate and will be soon signed by the President, is that any college graduate with a guaranteed (FFELP) or direct loan will be able to refinance or consolidate their loans at a new, low interest rate of 7.46% until January 31, 1999. Currently enrolled students can refinance their loans as well, with the same low rate until January 31, 1999. A good opportunity for many of our students.

WEB EMPLOYER—Web Employer is a component that empowers employers we work with to post positions and search for candidate resumes over the web. This means less data entry for our office and staff and fewer hassles with faxing candidate resumes. Web Employer gives 1stPlace! up-to-date information on all employer activity by creating referral records so that we know which employers are contacting which applicants. Employers can only view active applicant resumes and are restricted from viewing any additional applicant information. Web components allow us to track and administer every interaction students and employers have with the system from the 1stPlace! database within our office. CAMPUS ASSEMBLY—The Campus Assembly Executive Committee adopted a motion to change the regular Campus Assembly meeting dates for the 1998-1999 year. All of the meetings will be held at 4:00 p.m. in Dowell Hall 207. STUDENT INSURANCE—For those students who are enrolled in the Student Insurance policy offered by UMC, there will be an informational session Thursday, October 8 from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131. PARKING PERMITS—A reminder that all vehicles on campus must have a valid parking permit. Permits can be purchased from the Business Office in Selvig Hall. Vehicles without permits and/or parking in a No Parking Area will ticketed and/or towed. Thank you for your continued cooperation!
