LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON SERIES beginning December 8. FREE. Held in Brown Dining Room A & B at Noon. Topics to be covered include: Teambuilders/Icebreakers, Parliamentary Procedure, Etiquette Lunch, High Impact Trainer, How to Market Your Organization, Dress for Success, Leadership Crisis: The Big Flood, Resume Skills. Bring your lunch and feed your mind. The topic for December 8 is Parliamentary Procedure. A t-shirt and a certificate will be given to each participant who attends each session. INTRAMURAL ROSTERS ARE DUE—Rosters for women’s and men’s intramural basketball are due at the Bede Info Desk by December 19. Rosters can be picked up at the Bede Info Desk. Get your team together today!

BACK BY DEMAND—"SLIM HOPES"—The video featuring Jean Kilbourne, award-winning creator of STILL KILLING US SOFTLY, offers an in-depth analysis of how female bodies are depicted in advertising imagery and the devastating effects on that imagery on women’s health. Addressing the relationship between these images and the obsession of girls and women with dieting and thinness, SLIM HOPES offers a new way to think about life-threatening eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, as well as a well-documented critical perspectives on the social impact of advertising. View the video and have coffee and cookies with us. Video will be shown at 12:00 Noon and again at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9 in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131. It is 30 minutes in length. Everyone is invited. Sponsored by the UMC Commission on Women.

 

STUDY ABROAD FAIR—The Office of Multicultural/International Programs is sponsoring a Study Abroad Fair which will be held Thursday, December 11 in Sahlstrom Conference Center A, B, &C from 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Representatives of the International Programs from the Twin Cities and Morris campuses will be sharing information on study abroad opportunities for UMC students at those campuses. OUTDOOR ART—There are two proposals for outdoor art for the UTOC on display on the second floor of the Kiehle Library. The UMC Art Committee would like student input about these models. Please view these proposals at your leisure and contact George French (Gfrench) and express your opinions. Other members of the art committee can also be contacted and their names are on the display.

 

"SEX HAS A PRICE"—Pam Stenzel is the founder and director of "Straight Talk", an organization established for the purpose of education students about the issues of sexuality and the importance of chasity. She has spoken with over 100,000 students across the nation on the subjects of pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS. Pam will be discussing the consequences of sex outside of marriage in three basic categories: physical consequences, emotional consequences, and the consequences incurred by innocent parties. She believes people are capable of making good healthy decisions if they are given the facts and made aware of all the consequences of their decisions. This presentation will be held Tuesday, December 9 at 6:00 p.m. in Conference Center A & B. Everyone is welcome.

 

CONGRATULATIONS—Congratulations to Michelle Kazos, winner of the $25.00 gift certificate to the UMC Bookstore. Michelle had to correctly answer questions related to HIV/AIDS in order to register for the drawing. Thanks to all who participated at the World AIDS Day Booth. The cumulative total of AIDS cases in Minnesota totaled 3,098 as of July 1, 1997. This total includes 1,868 deaths.

CHRISTMAS TREES—If you are looking for a Christmas tree, the Natural Resources Club is selling Colorado blue spruce and Black Hills spruce 6feet – 8 feet for $15.00 and $20.00. If interested contact Chris Noble by e-mail UCWN001 or phone 281-8785.

 

EVENING OF CROSS COUNTRY SKIING—Campus Ministry is sponsoring an evening of cross country skiing. Also anyone wanting to help fill Christmas baskets for the poor are welcome to join us Friday, December 12 at 6:00 p.m. or deliver baskets Saturday morning December 13 at 9:00 a.m. Cars will leave from the Atrium both days.

 

COME ONE COME ALL—Come One, Come All to see the final results of fall quarters Drawing and Design Class-1152. The Art Show is on display in the front area of the Arts and Science Division Office in Sahlstrom Conference Center 109. This years class also participated in the painting of the mural downtown on the back of the Grand Theater. I would like to personally thank Jodi Donner, Dean Hefta, Kathryn Lanctot, Sharon Roper, Cory Schullo and Dawn Mallak for their help. I couldn’t have done it without your assistance and support.

 

FREE CHRISTMAS CRAFTS—Wednesday, December 10 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Bede Lounge you will be able to make FREE Christmas crafts for gifts. CHRISTMAS PROGRAM—Campus Ministry and UMC Choir invites everyone to a Christmas Program of Christmas stories and music around the fire in Bede Ballroom Monday, December 15 at 7:30 p.m.. Join us for cider and cookies and a good time to relax and get ready for the holidays!

 

CLUB ADVISOR MEETINGS—There are two club advisor meetings scheduled for Tuesday, December 9 and Wednesday, December 10 at Noon in 305 Selvig. This is the follow-up meeting on insurance, vehicle usage, and other concerns.

 

BEDE STUDENT CENTER WILL BE OPEN ON SUNDAYS—We have just received great news that we will be able to have Bede Student Center open on Sundays for the remainder of the year. This will allow students easy access to the game room, outdoor recreation equipment, a place to study and be. The hours will be Noon to 5:00 p.m.. If you have suggestions of things that could go on during this time please let Pam Holsinger-Fuchs know at 281-8505. We have several board games that can be checked out. We will also be popping popcorn. We are looking for someone to work on Saturdays –if you have workstudy and can work from Noon – 5:00 p.m. Saturdays stop by and talk with Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, Bede Hall, room 120.

 

COUNTRY DANCING OFFERED AT UMC—Tuesdays--There will be FREE country dancing lessons in Bede Ballroom beginning at 7:00 p.m. For more information contact Pam Holsinger-Fuchs in Bede Hall.

 

CAMPUS STORM CLOSING—When possible, the decision to close the campus due to adverse weather conditions and the corresponding announcement will be made by 6:30 a.m. The announcement will include the Children’s Center also being closed. The typical duration for the closing will be 7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The following radio and TV stations will be notified: Radio—KROX 1260 AM, KYCK 97FM, KQHT 96 FM, KTRF 1230 AM, KKAQ 1460 AM, KKCQ 1480 AM, and Television—WDAZ Channel 8, KVLY Channel 11, KXJB Channel 4. A voice message will also be left on campus telephones and the automated attendant at 281-6510. Should Crookston schools be closed (not delayed), but the University in session, a positive announcement will be made over the radio. Events with UMC sponsorship and non-UMC events held on campus are subject to the official general closing.

UMC CHOIR—The UMC Choir is taking a performing tour to New York City in February. Students planning to join choir winter quarter should contact one of the choir officers ASAP for information. The officers are Chad Palm, Tim Millner, Lori Mickelson, Rebecca Preisler and Shon Naslund.

DO YOU HAVE A VALID PARKING PERMIT—Reminder—vehicles parked on the campus must have a valid parking permit displayed from their rear view mirror. Permits may be purchased from the Business Office in Selvig. Vehicles without permits and in violation of posted and/or printed parking guidelines will be ticketed and towed.

 

DR. KANTEN WILL BE ON THE UMC CAMPUS EVERY WEEK--Student Health is pleased to announce that there will be a physician from the Altru Clinic on campus at Student Health, 111 Bede Hall, every Wednesday from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. Please call Stacey at 281-8512 to make an appointment or if you have any questions. Take advantage of this new service. Your insurance company will be billed at a normal office visit rate.

STUDENT/STAFF TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES—Students living off campus can pick up their copy of the Student/Staff Directory at the Registrar’s Office in Selvig Hall. On-campus students should have received their copy of the directory from their RA.

 

NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (NSEP)—Scholarship Opportunities for Study Abroad. Why Study Abroad? Student abroad offers the opportunity to gain valuable international experience. This experience is rapidly becoming part of a competitive resume. You will be entering a job market where almost all activities have been internationalized and to be competitive it is essential to have the skills necessary to thrive in the global arena. The NSEP provides opportunities for Americans to study in regions critical to U.S. national interests (excluding Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand). In the rapidly changing world environment, these regions are important international players. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens and matriculated as undergraduates at a U.S. university, college or community college. In this merit-based competition, students may apply for study in summer ’98, fall and/or spring ’99. NSEP awards are available up to a maximum of $8,000.00 per semester or $16,000.00 per academic year. BANNER PAGES—Before printing you should check to make sure that your banner page is off. This is a waste of paper. The steps to remove your banner page are: start button, settings, printers, double click on printer icon that you want to change, go to menu bar and select printer, properties, next window click the tab printer settings, says banner settings –click on enable banner under banner settings so that the checked box is blank, then click o.k.. If you have any questions, please contact the Help Desk in Dowell Hall or call 281-8000.

 

UMC FITNESS CENTER is now open Monday through Saturday from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Soon the center will

be open weekdays from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. as well. Saturday the Center is open from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Please renew your fall quarter membership. Cost is $15.00 per quarter for UMC employees, $40.00 for a family membership per quarter. AA GROUP—Students interested in forming a campus AA group may stop by Laurie Wilson’s office in 119 Bede to inquire. A contact person for regional AA groups has also left information about area meeting places and times. NA group will meet Thursday evenings at 7:00 at the Crookston Church of Christ on Barrette Avenue.

 

NEED MONEY—If you are a student who would like to earn $6.18 per hour without leaving campus to do it, consider signing up to read textbooks for students with reading disabilities. You do not have to be workstudy eligible for this job, but you must possess strong reading abilities and be able to complete work in a timely way.
