 HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOUSE NEEDS YOUR HELP!! Habitat for Humanity house needs your help now! To qualify for a $20,000.00 matching grant the house must be finished by Thanksgiving. Please help—even if only for a short time. The house is at 515 Woodland. NO experience required. Times to help are: Tuesdays 6:30 – 9:30, Thursdays 6:30 – 9:30, and Saturdays from 8:30 – 4:30. SPIRIT OF DOVES—Violence Intervention Project will display their "Spirit of Doves" project Monday, November 10, 1997 in the Bede Student Lounge from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The display includes shirts and personal items decorated by victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, child sexual abuse, and child abuse. Victims have artistically expressed their messages of pain, healing, and hope to society. A written story of the victim’s life accompanies each shirt. The Spirit of Doves will send a powerful message of hope to other victims and spread awareness to those who can help. Violence affects all of us – our families, friends, and loved ones. Take this time educate yourself about violence in our society and what each of us can do to end the cycle. At noon a presentation will be held in the Bede Lounge by a survivor.

 

VETERAN’S DAY CELEBRATION—On November 11 from 11:00 – 12:30 there will be a Veteran’s Day celebration in Morsel’s. Ask a vet about their experience. Join us as we lay a wreath on the memorial.

 

"FAST GIRLS" PLAY TO BE HELD AT KIEHLE AUDITORIUM—The Music-Theater Department is presenting the two-act comedy "Fast Girls" on November 7, 8, 9, and 10. Times are 7:30 p.m. on the 7th, 8th, and 10th and 3:00 p.m. on the 9th in Kiehle Auditorium. The show stars UMC students Jane Hoesly, Darci Delage, Mike Swartz, Tamilee Nennich and Jeremy Ferguson.$1.00 for UMC students and $3.00 for adults. Advanced tickets can be purchased at the Bede Info Desk or from cast members FOR ONLY $.50 for students and $2.00 for adults. The students have worked hard on this quality hilarious show and hope to see you there.

 

ETIQUETTE DINNER AND A SKIN CARE CLASS—On November 4 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. an etiquette dinner will be held in Sahlstrom Conference Center A & B and at 6:00 p.m. A skin care class will be offered. There will be room for 30 people. If you are interested please contact Rhonda in Food Service. You may use your meal card for the etiquette dinner. Off campus students will need to pay $6.50 for their meal.

 

ECE CHILDRENS FUN NIGHT—Fall into Winter Carnival: November 6 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in Bede Lounge. Children under 8 years of age and their parents are welcome. Some of the activities that will be provided are pin the feather on the turkey, leaf placement, and scented playdough. Plus there will be a "surprise" guest. There will also be food available at a reasonable rate. Sponsored by the UMC Early Childhood Club.

FREE CAR CARE SERVICE—Winter’s coming. Is your car or pickup ready for the cold? The Ag Industries Club is making appointments to check your vehicle so it’s ready for winter. We will also be doing oil changes but you have to supply the oil and oil filter. The service will be performed November 4 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Mech Ag Shop. You can sign up at the Bede Info Desk.

 

AGRI-PLACEMENT WILL BE ON CAMPUS—Lowell Tangen from Agri-Placement will be on campus November 5 to visit with students regarding careers and interviewing. He will share hot career areas, common interviewing mistakes and turnoffs, and will help students in practice interviewing. 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. Sahlstrom Conference Center 131 and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in Hill 15. U CARD IS COMING—The U Card is coming to the UMC campus. The U Card will serve as UMC’s new student, faculty, and staff photo ID card. You can use it for all your UMC photo ID purposes, like checking out library materials and gaining admittance to athletic events. The U Card even offers valuable checking and calling card accounts that save time and money. We invite everyone to get their U Card in room 7 Hill Hall on November 4, 5, & 6 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Free pop and candy will be available. Everyone will automatically be entered into a drawing for a VCR. Increase your chances to win by opening the U Card checking and calling card accounts. UMC CHOIR—The UMC Choir is taking a performing tour to New York City in February. Students planning to join choir winter quarter should contact one of the choir officers ASAP for information. The officers are Chad Palm, Tim Millner, Lori Mickelson, Rebecca Preisler and Shon Naslund.

 

FLU SHOT available for UMC faculty, staff, and students —Polk County Nursing will be on campus providing flu shots again this year. DO YOU HAVE A VALID PARKING PERMIT—Reminder—vehicles parked on the campus must have a valid parking permit displayed from their rear view mirror. Permits may be purchased from the Business Office in Selvig. Vehicles without permits and in violation of posted and/or printed parking guidelines will be ticketed and towed.

DR. KANTEN WILL BE ON THE UMC CAMPUS EVERY WEEK--Student Health is pleased to announce that there will be a physician from the Altru Clinic on campus at Student Health, 111 Bede Hall, every Wednesday from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. Please call Stacey at 281-8512 to make an appointment or if you have any questions. SCHOLARSHIP—Carol E. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship & Minnesota Alumnae Society Scholarship for the 1998-1999 academic year. Scholarships provide one year of financial support through a limited number of awards ranging from $500.00 to $2,500.00. You may apply if you are…at least 28 years old; returning from a five-year or longer break in obtaining a college/post-secondary education; admissible to or enrolled in a degree-granting program at any University of Minnesota campus. NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (NSEP)—Scholarship Opportunities for Study Abroad. Why Study Abroad? Student abroad offers the opportunity to gain valuable international experience. This experience is rapidly becoming part of a competitive resume. You will be entering a job market where almost all activities have been internationalized and to be competitive it is essential to have the skills necessary to thrive in the global arena. The NSEP provides opportunities for Americans to study in regions critical to U.S. national interests (excluding Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand). In the rapidly changing world environment, these regions are important international players. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens and matriculated as undergraduates at a U.S. university, college or community college. BANNER PAGES—Before printing you should check to make sure that your banner page is off. This is a waste of paper. The steps to remove your banner page are: start button, settings, printers, double click on printer icon that you want to change, go to menu bar and select printer, properties, next window click the tab printer settings, says banner settings –click on enable banner under banner settings so that the checked box is blank, then click o.k.. FAX MACHINE AVAILABLE FOR UMC STUDENT USE—You may send or receive a fax in the Counseling and Career Center, Bede Hall, room 106 for only $1.00 per page.

 

UMC FITNESS CENTER is now open Monday through Saturday from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Soon the center will

be open weekdays from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. as well. Saturday the Center is open from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Please renew your fall quarter membership. Cost is $15.00 per quarter for UMC employees, $40.00 for a family membership per quarter. AA GROUP—Students interested in forming a campus AA group may stop by Laurie Wilson’s office in 119 Bede to inquire. A contact person for regional AA groups has also left information about area meeting places and times. NA group will meet Thursday evenings at 7:00 at the Crookston Church of Christ on Barrette Avenue.

 

NEED MONEY—If you are a student who would like to earn $6.18 per hour without leaving campus to do it, consider signing up to read textbooks for students with reading disabilities. You do not have to be workstudy eligible for this job, but you must possess strong reading abilities and be able to complete work in a timely way. It contains recruitment ads from a wide variety of national and local organizations as well as several informative articles. It is designed to help you find rewarding part-time, full-time, and career opportunities. The College Recruiter is published three times a year.
