NATIONAL CENTER FOR THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF RAPE—Experts estimate that as many as 90 percent of all rapes are never reported; in those that are reported, about 60% of the victims know their assailants. (In one study by the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Rape, 92% of adolescent rape victims said they were acquainted with their attackers. Reported in Newsweek, April 9, 1984).

VALID PARKING PERMIT—Reminder—vehicles parked on the campus must have a valid parking permit displayed from their rear view mirror. Permits may be purchased from the Business Office in Selvig. Vehicles without permits and in violation of posted and/or printed parking guidelines will be ticketed and towed.

REWARD BEING OFFERED—The Security Services Department is offering a $100.00 reward for information leading to the apprehension of individuals involved in the bombing/explosion on campus Monday, September 29. IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? Starting Wednesday, October 8th there will be! Student Health is pleased to announce that there will be a physician from the Altru Clinic on campus at Student Health, 111 Bede Hall, every Wednesday from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. Please call Stacey at 281-8512 to make an appointment or if you have any questions. Take advantage of this new service. Your insurance company will be billed at a normal office visit rate.

DENNY’S WILL BE ON CAMPUS INTERVIEWINGDan Hoffstrom, General Manager for Denny’s will be on campus interviewing UMC students on Wednesday, October 15 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. To sign up for an interview contact Kellee in the Counseling and Career Center.

NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (NSEP)—Scholarship Opportunities for Study Abroad. Why Study Abroad? Student abroad offers the opportunity to gain valuable international experience. This experience is rapidly becoming part of a competitive resume. You will be entering a job market where almost all activities have been internationalized and to be competitive it is essential to have the skills necessary to thrive in the global arena. The NSEP provides opportunities for Americans to study in regions critical to U.S. national interests (excluding Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand). In the rapidly changing world environment, these regions are important international players. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens and matriculated as undergraduates at a U.S. university, college or community college. In this merit-based competition, students may apply for study in summer ’98, fall and/or spring ’99. NSEP awards are available up to a maximum of $8,000.00 per semester or $16,000.00 per academic year. IMMUNIZATIONS—Polk County Nursing will be on campus Monday, October 13 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Conference Center 131 providing students with immunizations (MMR and Tetanus boosters). These are FREE for students, $4.00 for anyone else. You will NOT be allowed to register for winter quarter until these records are in compliance with Minnesota state law. NEW ARCHERY TARGET AT UMC—Archery target now set up by the Meat Facilities Building by UTOC. The target is now available for practice.

CELEBRATING THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS OF ROSH HASHANAH AND YOM KIPPUR October 2 (begins sundown October 1 – October 11, 1997) 1 Tishri – 10 Tishri 5758. The Jewish High Holy Days are observed during the 10 day period between the first day (Rosh Hashanah) and the 10th day (Yom Kippur) of Tishri, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the most important of all Jewish Holidays and the only holidays that are purely religious. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated the first and second days of Tishri. It is a time of family gatherings, special meals and sweet tasting foods. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn day of the Jewish year and is observed on the tenth day of Tishri. It is a day of fasting, reflection and prayers.

UMC ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS—The University of Minnesota, Crookston Soccer team tied with UND on Tuesday afternoon 1-1. The Soccer team is currently 1-8-1.

REGAL’S PICK—Regal’s pick to WIN a movie pass to the Grand Theater. Each week a different student’s name will appear in the Regal’s Report. Spot your name to receive your movie pass and bring your I.D. to the Student Activities Office, 120 Bede Hall.

"The Bullas" Friday, October 10, 1997, 7:30 p.m. THE BULLAS are a fine entertainment choice for the 90’s. Soulful country, high energy bluegrass, fast, fancy fiddling, close, blood harmony, and heart-felt gospel are all part of THE BULLAS’ professional, yet personable show.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR BANNER PAGES ON YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTER—Before printing you should check to make sure that your banner page is off. This is a waste of paper. The steps to remove your banner page are: start button, settings, printers, double click on printer icon that you want to change, go to menu bar and select printer, properties, next window click the tab printer settings, says banner settings –click on enable banner under banner settings so that the checked box is blank, then click o.k.. If you have any questions, please contact the Help Desk in Dowell Hall or call 281-8000.

THE UMC FITNESS CENTER is now open Monday through Saturday from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Soon the center will be open weekdays from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. as well. Saturday the Center is open from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Please renew your fall quarter membership. Cost is $15.00 per quarter for UMC employees, $40.00 for a family membership per quarter. UROP—UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of a project. It encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special projects. UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student. Students may receive both a stipend (up to $950.00) and expense allowance (up to $250.00) for a single project. The maximum award is $1,200.00. All full-time undergraduates are eligible to apply provided they are in good academic standing. Students on academic probation and adult special students are not eligible. Application deadline is 4:30 p.m. on October 10, 1997 (for projects from January 1, 1998 to June 15, 1998); completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office, 302 Selvig Hall. Late applications will not be accepted. Copies of projects funded in the past are on reserve in the library. NA group will meet Thursday evenings at 7:00 at the Crookston Church of Christ on Barrette Avenue.

NEED MONEY—If you are a student who would like to earn $6.18 per hour without leaving campus to do it, consider signing up to read textbooks for students with reading disabilities. You do not have to be workstudy eligible for this job, but you must possess strong reading abilities and be able to complete work in a timely way. See Linda Rains in the Academic Assistance Center, Owen 217 for more information.
