INVITE A FRIEND TO UMC WEEKEND—October 31 – November 2 and November 7-9 are "Invite a Friend to UMC" weekends. Invite a friend, brother or sister to UMC and show them what’s great about our campus and programs. **Check out a class. Tour the campus. Cheer on a team (football, volleyball, IHSA, etc.). Take in a play (Fast Girls). Dance up a fright (Halloween). Eat free at Brown Dining Services. Here’s how: Send a postcard to invite your friend. Fee postcards and postage are available at the Bede Info Desk and in the Sahlstrom Conference Center Lobby from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Pick up a schedule of events from the Bede Info Desk. RIVERVIEW DAIRY is looking for full-time, permanent Milk Technicians. Description: 1600 cow diary, milking in double 24 parlor, preparation, spray and wipe. 8 hour shift…11-7, 7-3, 3-11. FREE CAR CARE SERVICE—Winter’s coming. Is your car or pickup ready for the cold? The Ag Industries Club is making appointments to check your vehicle so it’s ready for winter. We will also be doing oil changes but you have to supply the oil and oil filter. The service will be performed November 4 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Mech Ag Shop. You can sign up at the Bede Info Desk.

AGRI-PLACEMENT WILL BE ON CAMPUS—Lowell Tangen from Agri-Placement will be on campus November 5 to visit with students regarding careers and interviewing. He will share hot career areas, common interviewing mistakes and turnoffs, and will help students in practice interviewing. 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. Sahlstrom Conference Center 131 and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in Hill 15. STUDENT/STAFF TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES—Students living off campus can pick up their copy of the Student/Staff Directory at the Registrar’s Office in Selvig Hall. On-campus students should have received their copy of the directory from their RA.

RELIVE YOUR CHILDHOOD—Dress up for Halloween. Halloween night we will be Trick or Treating for canned goods and toiletries, they will be donated to the Care and Share Center. Meet in the Bede Lounge at 5:30 p.m. October 31. Prizes for best male and female costume.

UMC CHOIR—The UMC Choir is taking a performing tour to New York City in February. Students planning to join choir winter quarter should contact one of the choir officers ASAP for information. The officers are Chad Palm, Tim Millner, Lori Mickelson, Rebecca Preisler and Shon Naslund.

FLU SHOT available for UMC faculty, staff, and students —Polk County Nursing will be on campus providing flu shots again this year. There will be two separate clinics one for students and one for UMC employees. Friday, October 31 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131 is for UMC employees only and will cost $8.00 per shot. Tuesday, November 4 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131 is for UMC students only and will be FREE. Call Stacey at 281-8512 if you have any questions.

DO YOU HAVE A VALID PARKING PERMIT—Reminder—vehicles parked on the campus must have a valid parking permit displayed from their rear view mirror. Permits may be purchased from the Business Office in Selvig. Vehicles without permits and in violation of posted and/or printed parking guidelines will be ticketed and towed.

THINK ABOUT IT! REWARD BEING OFFERED—The Security Services Department is offering a $100.00 reward for information leading to the apprehension of individuals involved in the bombing/explosion on campus Monday, September 29. DR. KANTEN WILL BE ON THE UMC CAMPUS EVERY WEEK--Starting Wednesday, October 8^th there will be! Student Health is pleased to announce that there will be a physician from the Altru Clinic on campus at Student Health, 111 Bede Hall, every Wednesday from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. Please call Stacey at 281-8512 to make an appointment or if you have any questions. Take advantage of this new service. Your insurance company will be billed at a normal office visit rate.

SCHOLARSHIP—Carol E. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship & Minnesota Alumnae Society Scholarship for the 1998-1999 academic year. Scholarships provide one year of financial support through a limited number of awards ranging from $500.00 to $2,500.00. You may apply if you are…at least 28 years old; returning from a five-year or longer break in obtaining a college/post-secondary education; admissible to or enrolled in a degree-granting program at any University of Minnesota campus. NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (NSEP)—Scholarship Opportunities for Study Abroad. Why Study Abroad? Student abroad offers the opportunity to gain valuable international experience. This experience is rapidly becoming part of a competitive resume. You will be entering a job market where almost all activities have been internationalized and to be competitive it is essential to have the skills necessary to thrive in the global arena. The NSEP provides opportunities for Americans to study in regions critical to U.S. national interests (excluding Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand). In the rapidly changing world environment, these regions are important international players. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens and matriculated as undergraduates at a U.S. university, college or community college. In this merit-based competition, students may apply for study in summer ’98, fall and/or spring ’99. NSEP awards are available up to a maximum of $8,000.00 per semester or $16,000.00 per academic year. ARCHERY TARGET AT UMC—Archery target now set up by the Meat Facilities Building by UTOC. The target is now available for practice.

BOOKS AND COATS TO MUCH TO CARRY AROUND? LOCKERS FOR RENT ON CAMPUS—Tired of carrying your books around or worrying about your computers? Rent a locker for $5.00 a year plus a $5.00 deposit. Lockers are located all over campus. Stop by the Bede Info Desk for more information.

BANNER PAGES—Before printing you should check to make sure that your banner page is off. This is a waste of paper. The steps to remove your banner page are: start button, settings, printers, double click on printer icon that you want to change, go to menu bar and select printer, properties, next window click the tab printer settings, says banner settings –click on enable banner under banner settings so that the checked box is blank, then click o.k.. If you have any questions, please contact the Help Desk in Dowell Hall or call 281-8000.

FAX MACHINE AVAILABLE FOR UMC STUDENT USE—You may send or receive a fax in the Counseling and Career Center, Bede Hall, room 106 for only $1.00 per page.

UMC FITNESS CENTER is now open Monday through Saturday from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Soon the center will

be open weekdays from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. as well. Saturday the Center is open from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Please renew your fall quarter membership. Cost is $15.00 per quarter for UMC employees, $40.00 for a family membership per quarter. AA GROUP—Students interested in forming a campus AA group may stop by Laurie Wilson’s office in 119 Bede to inquire. A contact person for regional AA groups has also left information about area meeting places and times. NA group will meet Thursday evenings at 7:00 at the Crookston Church of Christ on Barrette Avenue.

NEED MONEY—If you are a student who would like to earn $6.18 per hour without leaving campus to do it, consider signing up to read textbooks for students with reading disabilities. You do not have to be workstudy eligible for this job, but you must possess strong reading abilities and be able to complete work in a timely way. See Linda Rains in the Academic Assistance Center, Owen 217 for more information.

ARE YOU WONDERING WHAT YOU CAN DO IN CROOKSTON FOR EXCITEMENT? We have the workstudy opportunity for you! COLLEGE RECRUITER EMPLOYMENT MAGAZINE—Copies of the College Recruiter employment magazine are located in the Career Center. It contains recruitment ads from a wide variety of national and local organizations as well as several informative articles. It is designed to help you find rewarding part-time, full-time, and career opportunities. The College Recruiter is published three times a year.
