Welcome to the Natural Resources Department Home Page! Our department includes programs in natural resources, horticulture, golf and turf management, and aviation. UMC is the “hands-on” campus of the University of Minnesota, where students learn principles as well as thinking, seeing, and doing things related to their field of interest. Here you can learn to fly a plane, develop a landscape, band a duck, collect eggs from walleyes, do a prescribed burn of a prairie, or help install a golf green. For more details, hit the “Degree Programs” link on this page. We “do stuff” here and that’s one of the key reasons why our students are in demand in the job market.
We have many unique programs at UMC; some, like Natural Resources Aviation are unique to North America. Our programs have award-winning faculty who are skilled in delivering hands-on instruction in the classroom and applying theory to real-world applications. We take the time to listen to students. We will work with you in one-on-one sessions to help with classroom related matters but also assist with career choices and making connections with future employers by helping you locate internships. You will be using the latest technology to keep in touch with the world, you may be competing in sports, or working together in some of the many student organizations on the campus. Our connected campus and friendly atmosphere foster a comfortable feeling of belonging and pride.
In 2006 and 2008, our Horticulture team won first place at the Mid-America Collegiate Horticulture Society contest and beat out several Division I university programs. And our students win awards! In 7 of the last 11 years, one of our wildlife students has received the Student Conservationist Award from the Minnesota Chapter of The Wildlife Society. In 5 of the last 7 years, one of our water resources students has received the comparable award from the Minnesota Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society which carries a $ 500 stipend as well. Check out our scholarships too.
If you’re an outdoors person, UMC is located where the prairie meets the forest and is defined by its many lakes and rivers. The Red Lake River winds through the city and is a popular canoeing and fishing river. Excellent hunting, fishing, hiking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling opportunities are available in the area. The Glacial Ridge Project, the largest prairie and wetland restoration project in North America, is just 10 miles to the east. From an outdoors perspective, you might say, “We’re in the middle of everywhere!”
If you have any questions, please give us a call at 1-800-UMC-MINN or 218-281-8100. We will be glad to visit with you about educational opportunities at UMC and put you in touch with a professor in your specific area of interest.
