Al Killough, Ph.D. has been invited to speak at Century College (White Bear Lake, MN) on Jan. 27th on the current political climate and election of president-elect Barack Obama. Perhaps this commentary will be quite timely and would enhance our understanding of the history of African Americans in this country within the context of Dr. King’s dream and issues our community still faces today.

U of M, Crookston Assistant Professor of Psychology Alvin Killough, Ph.D., Gives Keynote Address at Fifth Annual African World AIDS Day
The African World AIDS Day Planning Committee recently hosted its fifth annual African World AIDS Day. The conference, held at South High School in Minneapolis, Minn., was focused on the theme “United in the Fight against AIDS.” University of Minnesota, Crookston Assistant Professor Alvin Killough, Ph.D., gave the keynote address entitled “Being Black in the United States with HIV/AIDS.” The commemoration of African World AIDS Day is part of a national observance that began in 1988 marking December 1 as World AIDS Day. Guest speaker Alvin Killough, Ph.D., who teaches in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Department at the U of M, Crookston, and who is a Vietnam era veteran himself, spoke on Returning military personnel and post-traumatic stress disorder: What can families and communities do to help? . Invitation received by Al Killough, Ph.D. along with Wynfred Russell, MA, MLS, Director of the Center for Multicultural Services, Normandale Community College to present their research at the Minnesota Department of Health 2008 Office of Minority and Multicultural Health National Health Disparities Conference. The presentation topic is “Does Culture Matter: Structural Systems Framework Using Underlying Construct Analysis to Conceptualize and Evaluate Approaches to Risk Reduction and HIV Prevention Intervention among Minorities”. Conference dates and location are November 12-14, Mystic Lake Casino and Hotel, Prior Lake, MN.
Learning objectives include:

Understand the influence of factors related to the concept of race, ethnicity and culture as they pertain to health disparities
- Understand the influence of factors related to multicultural heritage, values and beliefs in HIV prevention and care
- Articulate a working definition of culture and culturally appropriate HIV prevention
- Identify characteristics of a culturally responsive health care worker
- Understand and articulate the role culture plays in health intervention
- Begin to conceptualize short-term and long-term goals, strategies, and actions needed to increase the participation of minorities at all levels of advocacy

Mark Huglen, Ph.D., associate professor of communication, was a featured speaker at the Agora Research Session, held September 18 at the University of North Dakota’s School of Communication. He presented “Actively Seeking Self-Revision,” an extension of his collaborative work with Rachel McCoppin, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication, for an article in the national publication Teaching Ideas for the Basic Communication Course and for a chapter in the forthcoming book Humanistic Critique of Education.
Sharon Neet, D.A., professor of history, presented a paper, “Two Histories of the Ruskin Utopia: A Study in Contrasts,” at Brandon University’s Northern Great Plains History Conference, held September 24-27 in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. The paper is part of her larger study of the socialist propaganda publications of J. A. Wayland and reform movements in pre-World War I America.
